What Jolene taught me about SEO: Patterns, Logic and Results

Most SEO professionals spend their days staring at data dashboards or decoding search engine documentation. I do that too, but I have a secret weapon sitting right next to my desk or sleeping behind my chair while working. Her name is Jolene and she is my dog.

I have shared my life with Jolene for almost eleven years now. We have been together since she was a tiny puppy. Over this decade of companionship, I have realized that her behavior and the natural logic of her mind have taught me more about my career than any textbook could. As I have spent many hours working on rankings and site audits, I have seen that Jolene, my dog and unofficial office partner, is actually a master of logical sequences. Her way of navigating the world has completely changed how I understand the universe of Search Engine Optimization.

Here is a look at what my dog has taught me about SEO:

  • How identifying patterns in daily life translates to spotting algorithm shifts.
  • The importance of the mental reset and changing your perspective when a strategy stalls.
  • Why following a logical sequence of actions is vital for achieving top rankings.
  • How reading human intent is more important than simply matching keywords.
  • The power of tenacity and persistence in long term projects.

Let’s look at these lessons more closely.

The Logic of Patterns: The Leash versus the Keys

Jolene is a data scientist without a laptop. She has spent eleven years observing and analyzing my patterns. She knows that when I grab my keys, I might be leaving without her, so this is a low priority event. But when I reach for the drawer where her leash is kept, her world explodes with excitement, given that this is a high priority event. She has mapped out the micro actions that lead to a specific result.

The SEO Lesson: In our industry, we often get distracted by noise. Jolene taught me to ignore the keys and focus on the leash. When an algorithm update happens, I do not look at every single change, but I look for the logical patterns: Which specific signals are actually moving the needle? Like Jolene, I have learned to identify the patterns in website data that signal a major shift in rankings is about to happen.

The Logic of the Reset: Changing the Angle

Sometimes, Jolene gets stuck. For example, when it is time to get into the car, she might stand in front of the trunk and refuse to jump in. If I insist or try to force her, her mind freezes and she becomes even more stuck. However, if I take her for a small loop on the leash, just a quick walk around the car to change her physical posture and angle, she resets. Suddenly, she jumps in happily.

The SEO Lesson: Sometimes we insist on a strategy that seems correct but simply is not working. We might be pushing a specific keyword or a content structure that should rank, but the needle does not move. The lesson is that if you keep forcing the same “correct” path, you might just stay stuck. Like the loop with Jolene, you sometimes need to take a step back and approach the problem from a different angle. Maybe the answer isn’t more optimization, but a complete change in perspective.

Logical Sequences: Actions and Results

Jolene’s life is governed by clear logical sequences: First, Kostis finishes his coffee, second, Kostis closes his laptop, third, it is time for a walk. If I skip the second step, she knows the third step is not happening yet. She understands the workflow of life.

The SEO Lesson: Search optimization is nothing more than a series of logical sequences. You cannot expect the result of ranking at the top if you have not completed the necessary sequence. This starts with technical health, moves to quality content and builds toward user trust. When a project stalls, I ask myself which part of the sequence I missed. Just as Jolene waits for the laptop to close, search engines wait for some foundations to be solid before they grant the reward.

Reading Intent: The “Jolene Algorithm”

Jolene is a master of nuance. She does not need me to say the words “I am stressed” or “I am happy” to understand exactly how to react. She reads the subtle cues in my body language, the tone of my voice and the specific energy I bring into the house. If I am rushing, she stays out of the way. If I am relaxed, she brings me her toy or comes to me looking for pets. She ignores the literal “noise” and focuses entirely on the underlying intent of the moment.

The SEO Lesson: For many years, our industry tried to trick search engines by simply repeating specific keywords over and over. But modern search logic has evolved to become much more like Jolene. It has moved beyond the literal word and now focuses on Search Intent. When a user types a query into a search bar or searches something using LLMs, they are not just looking for a match of characters. They have a specific human need. They might be looking to solve a problem, to make a purchase, or simply to gather information via search engines or AI models. Success in my work comes from looking past the words on the screen to solve that human need. If your content does not match the “vibe” and the purpose of the user, no amount of keywords will save you. Like Jolene, the most successful strategies are the ones that truly understand the person behind the action.

Jolene, the SEO Dog

Tenacity: The Toy under the Couch

Jolene has a very specific level of focus when her favorite toy rolls into the dark space under the couch. She does not just walk away or bark in frustration. Instead, she lies down flat on her belly to get a better view of the situation. She tries a different angle with her head. She uses one paw, then the other and then both. Sometimes she even sits back for a moment to wait and observe before trying again. She is relentlessly focused on the result regardless of the physical obstacle in her way.

The SEO Lesson: This work is a long game that requires incredible patience and active persistence. Some of my toughest projects felt exactly like that toy stuck in a hard to reach place. You can see the goal clearly, but you cannot quite touch it yet. Jolene’s logic is simple though: If the prize is worth it, you must keep testing and adjusting your strategy until you reach it. We should not get frustrated when the SEO landscape creates a barrier. Like Jolene, we just have to stay calm, keep our eyes on the prize and find a better angle to approach the problem until we finally pull that result into the light.

Final Thoughts

Next time you are stuck on a technical issue or a ranking drop, take a look at your dog. For me, watching Jolene has been a masterclass in observation and logic.

Search optimization is surely about infrastucture, code, content, UX, etc., but there is more. It is about understanding the natural laws of cause and effect. So, if you ever need a reminder of how that works, just ask Jolene. Though she will probably charge you one treat for the advice.
